(Documents has been updated to version 5.6! It has a fresh overhaul to how it handles cloud files- look for an updated review soon.)

Features: Documents is a full fledged file manger for iOS. It allows you to read, mange, and save multiple file, audio, and video formats. It supports common file formats like Office and iWork documents, PDF and .txt/rtf, .jpeg and .png, and .mov and mp3. The app also has strong file management tools as it allows you to copy, zip/unzip, move and delete file, sync and download/upload files between storage services and open password protected files. The app also supports saving and opening from iOS document picker and has a built-in web browsers for direct downloads. Another cool feature is that the app can integrate with other Readdle apps, that extends some of their features to the app. One example is PDF Expert, if you have it installed on your device, you be able to access all of the features within Document (page merging and creation, more annotations options, etc.).

Summary: Documents is a powerful file and document manager for iOS that comes with a clean and stable interface.

Pro:

  • Supports a variety of file formats and can open archived files
  • Supports file syncing with all major cloud services and custom FTP/SFTP servers, and Windows SMB
  • Has a very nice interface and is extremely stable
  • Supports file indexing and full document search

Con:

  • Does not support ePub or eBook

How I use it: I use Document as my main file manger on my iPad and iPhone. I sync all of my google drive files within it, and using the PDF Expert add-on, it is my main PDF editing app. I also use it in tandem with Voice Dream Reader, so that VDR speaks the document I have open in documents, and I can then annotate it when I hear something important. My favorite part of this app is the simple fact that it is so stable and easy to use. In 3+ years of usage it has crashed on me 3 times, which is impressive given how heavily I use it! Overall, this app has really helped me to go paperless as it let me unite all of my cloud storage sources into one place- which is helpful as my iPad has limited storage and I really rely on the cloud for storage and syncing between other devices.
